I am newly diaganosed with diabetes and still trying to understand the implications. I seem to be able to manage by glucose levels with diet and exercise and have had only one spike out of range after a carb heavy lunch.
My question is what is more important? Maintaining a good average glucose level or avoiding spikes? If all my numbers are in range for weeks and I decide to splurge one day and drive up my glucose levels for the day, that's not going to drastically affect my average. Is it my A1c number that matters most, or the day-to-day, hour-to-hour glucose levels? |

The A1c matters most to me, as this is my average over a period of three (3) months. However, I try to keep my daily average to less than 140 mg/dl. This equates to an A1c of 6.5% or less. It is not a normal A1c goal, but I know that it will minimize problems down the road.
