I was diagnosed 2 months ago after my annual physical when my A1C hit 6.8 and I had a 126 on the office stick. I'm 68 and have been an active runner for 32 years. My doctor prescribed one metformin tab a day but I have not taken any yet. I'm trying to educate myself and change my eating habits in an attempt to avoid taking a pill. I 've met with a dietitian and have registered for several education classes. I've always been a cookie monster with a glass of milk and I love ice cream. I tried several sugar free cookies that are great but I eat too many so I stopped buying them.
I've registered for the Long Island marathon in May. This will be my 7th completion out of 10 attempts. Increasing my weekly mileage has also increased my hunger, as it always has and I'm relying on low fat peanut butter and granola snacks to get me to meal time. My long run right now is an hour an a half but next month I'll push it to 2 hours and in March to 2 and a half hours.
Any suggestions on eating before, during and after these long runs?
