Default type one or type 2?

I was diagnosed with type 2 in '93. I'm now on 54 units of lantus and a sliding scale of him along @ mealtime. My educator seems to think I'm a type one. I was in my 30's when I found out I was diabetic. Any wisdom on this?

Many T2's have become insulin dependent through the years. The reason for this is that the T2 meds will only help for so long, usually about ten (10) years. My guess is that you would be classified Insulin Dependent Type 2. However, there is no way of really knowing your type without a series of tests run by your doctor. Good luck with your control and management.

Thanks for the share cavemom!

I'm very feeling on you with this one. I've had diabetes for 10 yrs now. I've been diagnosed with Diabetes since 21 yrs of age. Ill be 31 this year and since I was diagnosed I was TOLD by my doc and hospital staff (I was hospitalized more than a few occasions) that I was type 2 with insulin. A new doctor that works along side of my regular doctor was curious as to why my sugars are not doing well. She went into further investigations and noticed that I was TYPE 1 all along!!! I remember being checked by my mother on her meter at 18yrs old and my sugar was 583 at the time. But of course my mother didn't say anything nor take me to the hospital. I'm in shock but most importantly MAD because I can't get back 10 yrs of my life. It's all gone. I could of been on the pump and be fine instead of tests run on me like I'm some LAB RAT. Just trying to stay hopeful and encouraged. I know I can beat it!
