Default Is Metformin a permanent part of my life?

I was diagnosed T2 6 months ago. Since then, I have lost 26 pounds, gotten off BP meds and acid reducers and I feel great. My A1c was 8.3 at diagnosis. It is down to 4.9 here on GB and it was 5.6 at my last lab(3 months ago). I am on 500 ml of regular release Metformin once a day with breakfast. Is it possible to be med free somewhere down the road. I watch my diet very closely, but am NOT doing anything extreme with diet. I run 30 miles a week and am in the best shape if my life. Anyone here graduated from meds?

Default You can get off Metformin

I got out of diabetes several years ago through diet. Of couse, I went off all my diabetes meds, including Metformin. I fell back into my old eating ways and returned to diabetes, but now I'm off Metformin (because of the side effects) and my blood glucose has been lower since I got off it because I have also been eating correctly.

Good luck!

I lost 30 lbs & got off meds. Put it back on and worse numbers than before. Yes, for some it can be controlled by weight. Working on getting off again & for good this time.

Default Diabetes management is hard work

Runningdad

It is hard work managing your diabetes. I have also been a type 2 diabetic for about 7 yrs. it is a progressive, debilitating disease. If you fall off the wagon regarding diet, exercise, meds.,Weight loss, as I have several times, it is waiting for you. From what I have read, many people do get off their meds, but this must only be done with your doctor's knowledge/approval/cooperation. Diet and exercise are the best way to control Diabetes. According to what I have read the body can become resistant to pharmaceutical meds., necessitating higher and higher doses to get the desired results. Eventually this can cause damage to the kidneys. You should Research online. There is a wealth of information available, so read up and reach your own conclusions. This is just my opinion. Keep running.

Thank you for your comments! I am now off Metformin and my BG is normal with an A1c of 5.5 ( down from 8.6 in 6 months). I am continuing my running and diet and am holding my weight at my goal. This can be done people!
