Default mmol/l or mg/dl??

I was diagnosed with type 2 last week and my doctor gave me a number of 27.8. I did the conversion and got 500. Is there a universal standard that is preferred? Is 500 as bad as it sounds? I have no idea what to do, how to start or if anything will ever improve that number? I have an appt with a dietician tomorrow so I'm hoping they can answer a lot of the questions keeping me awake at night.

A 27.8 mmol/L equates to an A1c of ~19.1 or slightly over ~500 mg/dl. To answer your question, this is not good. As for a standard try to get your blood sugar below 140 mg/dl or 7.8 mmol/L for now and set your goal for a normal blood sugar, see the normal blood sugar link. Read the first three threads in the Type 2 Section. They will help you a lot.

Default Thanks

Got results back from last Friday. They were 15.6. Just got my first monitor and strips and it reads 8.9. Is it possible to have such a HUGE spike like the first test? Maybe the test was compromised? Is it possible for someone to have that big a number? I do...did...drink slurpees all the time and eat crap etc etc because I didn't know any better.

It is entirely possible to have a compromised test. Just make sure that you was your hands with soap and water, prior to testing.

Drinking slurpees is probably not a drink that you should choose if you have diabetes. Successfully managing your diabetes is pretty much a healthy lifestyle change. Eating healthy is something that all of us should have been doing all along, it just took diabetes to wake us up.
