Default steroids

Diagnosed as type 2 in August, 2010, and lost my right foot foot to gangrene. (Got my new foot yesterday!) Possibly from the diabetes, I've had eye problems; both eyes started growing extra blood vessels, distorting the retinas. I've now had laser surgery on both eyes, with a shot of steroids in the eye after surgery to reduce scarring.

Prior to the surgery, my readings were really good, with an Aic of 5.0 in January. In fact, my mother thinks I may not be truly diabetic, since I've had regular readings of 100 or lower first thing in the morning, even as low as 81, and felt fine. She gets shaky, sweaty and nervous under 100, and I've never had that. But since the first surgery February 2, I've noticed the numbers creeping up a bit. No higher than 120 fasting, but higher than I like. Is this a problem, and how long should it take for the steroids to stop affecting my readings?

I am wondering this same question about prednisone. I generally have really low blood sugars and rarely, if ever, have had overly high blood sugars. I am being tested for possible addison's and assume I have some sort of adrenal fatigue which is what is keeping my bg so low. I recently was put on prednisone for bronchitis and have been experiencing high bg levels. My day is like a roller coaster from lows to highs since I took it even though I am not currently on prednisone. Does anyone know how long it takes for the body to recover from that drug?

The previous year my mother died of cancer, she was not a diabetic. During her chemo treatments she was given steroids to help offset the chemo side effects. They told us to watch her BG as steroids and at the dose she was taking will affect/normally raise BG. In the hospital they had to give her insulin shots, but fortunately when we brought her home her BG was low enough we did not have to. We also had to slowly back-off the steroids and did not just stop them suddenly, as this can cause problems as well.

A lot of drugs can affect BG, as well as people differently and of course stress can wreck havoc with your BG as well.

I'm not doctor just relating my experience so you should consult your doc.

Thanks dpawley. Will do. Your thread was much appreciated Does anyone else have any experience with prednisone or steroid injections and how long it typically takes for the body/BG to recover from them? Any input is appreciated.
