You are not your mother. Your husband and friends have no idea what it takes to get Diabetes under control but that's OK too. Looking around, most Americans don't have a clue what they are doing to their bodies or they don't care, you do. I inherited Diabetes like you and have stopped asking why. Doesn't make any difference anyways, you can control it.
To get my A1c down, I had to double the exercise I was doing weekly and cut the carbs by 50%. Glucose Buddy really helps with the details and tracking your progress.
Talk to a dietitian about counting carbs and setting some reasonable goals.
If there is a YMCA or another gym close to you talk to one of the personal trainers about exercise and a plan that works for you. There are lots of choices besides tread mills and weights. My trainer is also a Diabetic.
I think you can do it with exercise and counting carbs.
