See the doctor as soon as you can. It sounds like you must be doing pretty well with your control, but the doctors visit and A1c lab results are preventive maintenance.
There have been several people with diabetes that have had children that did not have diabetes. However, the possibility is always there and in the genes. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Something you should check into, if you are not already doing, is carb counting and bolus insulin injections for the carb intake.
