Yes, but they have a number of uses. It was a trick I picked up from a book about your first year as a diabetic (cannot remember the author). Also a book about achieving normal blood sugar, which used these to test a number of foods by putting the food in your mouth, letting the silica mix with it, and putting some of it in contact with the stick ... although I have not tried this.
Using it to test drinks is especially good when you are out in a pub/club so you know if what you asked for (i.e. a diet drink) is what you got.
However, whenever I try something for the first time I always test afterwards with my BG monitor also.
