If you want to control it without medicines changing lifestyle, diet plan and exercise are the key elements. It is very hard to control if one of these elements is missing.
There are certain lifestyle practices you can adopt to control diabetes.

ELIMINATE sugars from your diet -- sodas, fruit juices, energy drinks, sports drinks, candies, cakes, cookies, pies, ice cream . . . .

REDUCE starches -- eat less breads , crackers, pastas, rice, corn, potatoes.

INCREASE fibers -- green vegetables, whole grain breads, Cheerios

GET MORE exercise -- Walk, run, ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball or soccer

MAINTAIN a normal-to-thin height-to-weight ratio.

Healthy diet with lots of fruits vegetables and proteins

Just in case, have the doctor do an A1C test once every year, when you get your yearly physical. This test is an accurate "tracker" of blood sugars, and can diagnose or predict diabetes before it happens. If the A1C reading is HIGH you need to begin treatment before damage is done.
