I highly recommend Jenny Ruhl's Diet 101 book. In Chapter 9, she gives very practical advice to learn how many carbs you can eat and keep your blood sugar in "heart healthy" range by testing before lunch or dinner, 1 and 2 hours after. I also recommend protein shakes made with low carb, high protein whey. They curb appetite. Made with almond milk and heavy whipping cream and low net carb fruits etc, a meal like breakfast will have 10-20 carbs. This will give you a good head start on controlling carbs for the day.
