20 weeks pregnant with low lying placenta

I am 20 weeks pregnant and on my last check up I was told by my doctor that I have a low lying placenta. I want to know what does a placenta does and what factors can affect the placenta? I also heard that some celebrities ate their placenta, is this safe?

I just saw this online "The placenta plays a key role in the nutrition of the fetus. It mediates the active transport of nutrients and metabolic wastes across the barrier separating maternal and fetal compartments, as well as modifying the composition of some nutrients through its own metabolic activity." :)
