Insulin for Type 2
 

I am a 57 year old surgeon. Type 2 for about past 20 years. Recently blood sugars,especially fasting, have been high. Above 144 mg/dl. Sometimes 225 mg/dl !!! So with my endocrinologist's help , I started one shot of long acting insulin Glargine nightly. PERFECT. my blood sugars now hover at 108 to 117 ! The thought of insulin injections used to scare me. Being a surgeon does not mean I like needles pointed at me ! Modern technology makes injections almost painless. Small sharp efficient needles. Mounted on a pen delivering metered units of insulin. At some time late in a Type 2 person's good life injected insulin becomes necessary. It helps to rest your overstrained pancrease. I share this to bring you the good news that insulin injections are simple and painless. Check with your doctor when you should give your pancreatic cells a good rest against insulin resistance. Use insulin. 😷😃

Well said. Starting an insulin regimen was on of the best things that I have done.

Read through the first three threads in the Type 2 Section, when you get a chance, if you have not already done so. These threads will most-likely help you a lot. Self education is one of the keys to successful management of your diabetes, along with a healthy / sensible diet and exercise. Basically, diabetes requires a life-style change for the better. Good luck with your control and management.

Just started once a day injections of insulin and am doing Medifast to lose weight. But everything I read about insulin says it makes you gain weight! One explanation I read was that those who gained weight when their sugars stabilized on insulin had been dropping weight with high BG - that's not me! But despite strict adherence to my program, I have not lost an ounce in nearly a week. And that is odd on Medifast. What have others experienced with weight loss/gain on insulin?

Insulin does make loosing weight more difficult. However, I have had some luck with weight loss while being insulin dependent. In order to do this I had to limit my meal intake to around 30 carbs per meal. It was very difficult for me, your mileage may vary (YMMV).
