New Type 1 - Considering Dr Bernstein - Advice

Hello!

Having recently (2 weeks ago) been diagnosed with Type 1, I am considering following Dr Bernsteins advice on a strict low carb diet. I have only just started reading his book, but wondered if anyone else has had any experiences good or bad from following his diet.

Welcome to the Forum! :)

Are you going to use this for weight loss, along with your diabetes management?

Thank you! :)

No, I don't need to lose any weight. I would like to maintain my current weight but just keep my blood glucose level as close to a "normal" person as possible.

I seem to have spikes after meals, and getting getting the timing right for my insulin jabs seems to be rather luck than judgement. I know I will get better at it the longer I have diabetes, but if having a low carb diet makes it easier, I am considering trying it.

The low carb is the way to go for some people, you just have to do what works for you. Counting carbs is a must for people with diabetes, especially Type 1. If you haven't done so yet, find a great doctor (preferably an Endocrinologist) and have them calculate your ISF (Insulin Sensitivity Factor) and ICR (Insulin to Carb "Coverage" Ratio). Training on how to calculate the insulin injection and carb counting is a must. You may also want to look into a pump, since these ratios are included in the pump memory and all you have to do is dial up your carbs after each meal. Test Often and good luck with your control and management.
