Scared to test blood sugar
 

I am in high school and I get really embarrassed to check my blood sugar during school. My main problem is getting an after breakfast reading, because most of the kids in the class I have at that time are older than me and I get really embarrassed about checking my blood sugar. Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this?

I know where you are coming from and I can sympathize with your situation. First of all, I would check with the teacher, of that class, to see if you can be excused to go to the restroom and test. If that doesn't work, try testing in a remote location and not in front of the class. Most people are understanding, but there are always the problem makers. I have been testing for so long, in front of people, it doesn't bother me any more. I know that I have to do this to live and they can like it or turn their head. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, just remember to test often.

Yes, you should talk with the teacher about blood sugar testing, before quizzes or tests. Please remind him/her that stress will quickly elevate the blood sugar of a person with diabetes to a very high and dangerous level. This in turn will rapidly make them very sick if not attended to, in a timely manner.

I do not have a 504 plan, but I will talk to my teacher. I decided to try just testing in class and it wasn't as bad as I thought.

Since you are still in high school, go to your school's health office to check your BGL. They can provide a clean, discreet location for you do your testing. Your school should allow you a "free pass" to get out of class to tend to your medical issues whenever you need. They are also trained to assist you if you need it.

I was just diagnosed, and am new to checking my BGL, I work at a college. I am also embarrassed checking my BGL with people around me. I go hide in the handicapped stall of the bathroom for a few minutes to do my testing.

You should definitely get a 504 plan for accommodations both during class, during tests and quizzes, and during standardized assessments, including the SAT. The accommodations should include being able to go to the nurse's office or other location to test, to take breaks as needed, and bring snacks and/or drinks into longer assessments to keep your blood sugar even. You or one of your parents should ask for this accommodation from the principal or assistant principal IN WRITING. You are entitled to this by law and it should not be difficult to obtain.
