high blood sugar

I was discharged from the hospital a week an a half ago, after a week long stay. Since then I've started a new blood pressure medicine and stopped the metformin. For the last few days I've felt horrible. Some is the bp medicine, Norvasc, some is high blood sugar. It got down to 144 at bedtime last night, woke up to 177. Went to church, had two cheese straws ( no fruit or juice) and came home to a reading of 234. I've been using my mothers Novalog on a sliding scale and it doesnt do much. I see my GP tomorrow morning, but any ideas till then? Trying to drink more water, but 'm not really thirsty.

Welcome to the Forum!

The carb counting and exercise really help. Most people find that the Novolog works too, but the sliding scale is old school. Try getting your doctor to give you the insulin to carbohydrate ratio (ICR) and the insulin sensitivity factor (ISF). You will then be able to bolus for the carbs eaten as described in Advanced Carb Counting.

Read through the first three threads in the Type 2 Section, when you get a chance, if you have not already done so. These threads will most-likely help you a lot. Self education is one of the keys to successful management of your diabetes, along with a healthy / sensible diet and exercise. Basically, diabetes requires a life-style change for the better. Good luck with your control and management.

I am also battling with high sugars , i was recently in hospital and while there my sugars were very low, dropped lantus to 40 mg and didnt always use humalog for meals if sugar low, now i running high, have to really watch my carb intake, bread and potatoes really shoot my sugars up, so have to be very aware of what food you are eating and what effect they have on you

After a second hospital stay, I started Humalog before meals. My GP had me on Lantis at bedtime. However for the next 5 or so weeks I'm taking Prednisone which has things all over. 15 units Humalog before meals, sliding scale Humalog after meals, 20 units of Lantis at bedtime. 7 shots a day. At least it is short term.

My fasting numbers have always been high and then they go down as the morning goes on. The nutritionist I am now seeing told me to have some protein before bedtime (some almond Butter, or turkey, or a hard boiled egg). It has brought my fasting numbers to down around 100. Good luck.

Did your nutritionist happen to mention dawn phenomenon?

Yes, she did mention it and explained exactly why it occurs. She even had me check my glucose several nights around 3 am and again at around 7 or 8 am to see the difference in numbers. I am not on meds, although I should have been. I let myself go for a year in denial of the diabetes. By having a protein before bedtime my fasting numbers for the past two weeks have ranged between 97 and 102. By the way, she also has me on a holistic supplement called Diaplex. That made a significant difference in all my glucose readings from the very beginning. I have been on that for 4 weeks now. Marlene
