New here

My son, age 13, was just diagnosed about two weeks ago. We spent 5 days in Children's Hospital Pittsburgh. I feel like I'm grieving...so much to take in and just when I think his numbers are leveling, they spike or drop. Any support/advice is appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum! :)

I, along with many others on this site, have been exactly where you are. T1 diabetes management does get better/easier in time. The best advice that I can give you is to learn to count carbs. I can tell you, after years of management, that this one thing will most-likely help you the most. You can find information about this in the first three threads of the T2 Section. Read all three posts, as they basically apply to anyone who has diabetes. Good luck with your son's control and management.

There was a very interesting family on "super nanny" one show. They had a child, 9, with type1 and the parents were suffering more than the child and even near separation from stress. Mom was so devastated by boys condition and dad was trying to make boy eat right and it was chaotic. End result was, they trained up the boy on the condition and what was necessary to live. The boy did so much better by learning his minimums, the parents were eventually healed:)

I am diabetic, I know what you mean by a lt the spies and drops. Your son, is younger and will be better at dealing with it than you think. There is a Diabetic Nutrition class at almost all hospitals or major clinic organizations. Try them, too.
