newly diagnosed

I am 33 and just diagnosed type 1. My family doctor (friend of family) has not referred me to an endo doc and feels it is not really needed. I am not sure about that. I was wondering if most people do see an endo doc or just their family physician?!? I go to a diabetic education class referred by my doc next week. Is this enough? Any advice would greatly help. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum! :)

I don't have an Endo either. I use my family physician, who has been a friend and school mate since we were small children. That being said, I don't think that Endo's are a must have. However, they can help if you have problems. Nutritionist are about the same. I think that I would try the classes and give it some time to see how your control is on your own. You can always make an appointment with the Endo at a later date.

It may depend on your primary doctor's experience. Mine did not feel competent to manage Type 1 with me, and sent me to an endo immediately. The endo got me started on MDI, but otherwise hasn't given me much advice I haven't already read.

Bobby:

Did your Endo calculate your insulin to carbohydrate ratio (ICR) and insulin sensitivity factor (ISF) or just put you on the "Sliding Scale"?
