high sugars, burning smell in nose
 

I've often noticed that when I eat something that either spikes my sugar quickly or my sugar has reached super high levels, I sometimes get an odd smell in my nose, almost like a burning smell but not like anything I've ever smelled before - it's rather difficult to explain. Has anyone else had that sensation or experience with high blood sugars?

Same here. I thought it smells like ammonia. The first several times I noticed it I was in my van driving down the road and I thought something was wrong with the A/C.

I don't have any medical knowledge, but I have always attributed this to extra sugars in the finer blood vessels in the nose (to me it smells more sugary), just like my eyes get sore/dry more quickly when my BG is high...

I have also had the strong ammonia smell in my nose when (pre diagnosis hindsight) sugar was high.

Maybe it is ketones you smell. The body breaks down fat as an energy source when it can't use sugars. Ketones are a metabolite of fats and are excreted in body fluids including saliva. You can buy ketostix at a pharmacy to test for ketones in urine

I worry that the high sugars are leading you into the edges of ketoacidosis which is dangerous for us. Please check for ketones in urine. Google ketoacidosis in type 2 diabetes ---

The way to burning those sugar out is running and take some dietary supplements like Raspberry Ketone. It really works on weight cut and reduce the blood sugar level .

Ammonia smell may be a sign of kidney problems , see your doctor

I was diagnosed a month ago with Type-II

I have been noticing faint odors in my nose. Sometimes fruity and other times like a slice of wheat bread. Not sure what it indicates, still trying to connect it with a particular time of day or activity. Not sure how common this is.
