What do you eat for breakfast?

This is the 1 meal of the day I have the hardest time with.
I just don't know what to eat ... I'm not a big fan of eggs, and I don't want to do sausage, bacon, etc. (I have VERY high triglycerides)

Also, I can't eat much cereals or oatmeals (I have Celiac Disease).

So, any suggestions?

What do you alll eat for breakfast to balance the carbs/protein?
I'm looking for some fresh ideas!

dano 05-04-2010 12:28 AM

I generally eat 2 eggs, 2 pieces of low cal wheat bread, 2 pieces of bacon, fruit spread for the toast and salsa for the eggs or 1 cup cheerios and 1/4 cup skim milk or a peanut butter sandwich. According to your post I have not been much help to you. :) Have you tried oat meal? If you can eat this do so in moderation as it spikes some peoples blood sugar. I am waiting to see what everyone else post. When you find what is best for you can to eat at breakfast please let us know.

dano 05-04-2010 12:42 AM

Sorry I just noticed you can't do the oatmeal.

Have you tried fruits for breakfast, cantalope and other types of melons?

Some ideas for snacks... nuts (almonds are one of the best), cheese, dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher), pork rinds/scratchings, cold meats, boiled eggs, peanut butter.

I hope it helps!

Yesterday I made myself a great breakfast.

I peeled a granny smith apple and then cut it into slices. Then I took a little peanut butter (1 or 2 tblsp), a small amount of low fat cream cheese (1 or 2 tblspn) and a little cinnamon. I mixed it all together and then spread it on the apple slices. It was really yummy and gave me a great start of the day with the protein in it.

I typically eat frozen meals. I too am not a fan of eggs or oatmeal. And cereal and milk just rockets my stuff up. Oh and I don't like eating right when I get up either. So I usually warm up a meal when I get to the office. Yes they have higher sodium and stuff but I know exactly how many carbs, protein, and calories I'm eating and that's the main thing.

I used to eat a lot of sandwiches too - can get all 4 food groups in on a sandwich but now I'm very anti sandwich. LOL.

janzar 06-09-2010 10:48 AM

I switch off with (this is th best!!) oikos greek yogurt + splenda+blueberries+handful of berries, or....protein bar with a low carb rating...or eggs with ham. I am finding that carbs are really throwing my numbers off!

Egg beaters?

I know you said you don't go for eggs. If it's the taste, this won't help.
My standard breakfast is an egg-beater omelet equivalent to 2 eggs. In it goes 1 oz of cheddar and a chopped up very thin slice of ham and about 3oz of mushrooms. I have an English muffin with peanut butter and 2 cups of coffee.

The eggbeaters take away most of the cholesterol and fat. The whole thing is less than 30g of carbs.

dlwiii 06-28-2010 02:15 PM

I find that oatmeal spikes my glucose, but would like some kind of cold cereal. I could use soy milk, but still don't know what specific cereal would be best.

Any suggestions? I don't want generic answers like "ones low in carbs and sugar" - I know that already. But if anyone has a morning favorite I would love to know!

dano 06-28-2010 03:03 PM

I generally eat one (1) cup cheerios at 20g carbs and they are heart healthy. :D

smileydeb 07-11-2010 04:31 AM

There is flourless bread out there for celiacs, if you get sprouted grain bread, it is hearty and healthy. Add some peanut butter on there of lean ham for protein and some fruit, glass of milk(not sure if you can have milk) and you have some good food groups going in!

Quick Breakfast

I'm not a big breakfast person. In fact I used to just skip it but with my diabetes I need to eat something. Here's what I have: 1 BagelThin with 1 slice of canadian bacon and cheese on it. I toast the bagelthin then put the cheese and canadian bacon on it and put it in the microwave for 11 seconds to melt the cheese. The total carbs are 27g.

Don't know if this helps. I don't know anything about celiacs. Maybe it will help someone else.

Breakfast alternatives

These have worked for me:
1) Morningstar sausage patties - they are vegetarian and quite good
2) Cottage cheese and mixed berries
3) Vanilla Greek yogurt with fresh fruit

I can't have any cereal without spiking my sugar. Hope this helps.

acktennislady 08-06-2010 04:06 AM

breakfast foods

greek yogurt (fage 0 or 2% plain) great carb count with strawberries or blue berries
or 2 pieces lowfat baby-bel cheese and a Pure Protein bar
or peanut butter w/apple
or hard boiled egg (1-2) and piece of fruit

but usually I eat the greek yogurt with fruit

then snack is cheese and then bar

what I eat for Breakfast

for me I eat different iteams every day. One day like today was one slice of toast and marbel sliced cheese with coffee. Yesterday seamee seed bagel with one half cheese and the other half peanut butter and coffee and on Sunday it was marble cheese cut up and a peach cut up and four ravoli and coffee. Saturday a BLT cut in half. At Disney World yougert and coffee fruit sometime during the day.

tri-dude 08-20-2010 07:16 AM

Try a whole grain bread (called black bread in Denmark) sandwich with low fat cheese and lots of low fat meats, mustard... Or for a bit less, we eat open face sandwiches here which is just a single slice of black bread and a slice of cheese, but I find it necessary to have protein with each meal to slow the absorption of the complex carbs.

Regards,
Tri-dude

Thank you guys!

Low carb breakfast

I like to make myself a soy or almond milk green tea latte with cinnamon. I get my antioxidants (matcha green tea loaded with them) and a gentler sustained caffeine boost. Also discovered cultured coconut milk which I mix with flaxseed with berry bits. All products unsweetened, organic where available and no artificial sweeteners. I'm lucky to live near Trader Joes and Whole Foods and alternate products abound!

Hi there,

Have you tried making a fresh smoothie? Great way to get some fruit and slow release carbs inside you first thing with minimum effort.

Here's what I have every morning without fail, I believe in a big hearty breakfast to kickstart the day :)

Smoothie (approx 70g carb):

x1 banana
x1 muller light yoghurt pot
1/2 cups of raw oats
semi skimmed milk

I also have the folllowing:

x2 wholemeal toast (approx 30g carb):
x3 boiled eggs (eat egg whites only so 0g crabs)

As I said a big breakfast, but it's healthy and does not spike my sugars due to the generally low gi content of everything.

Hope this helps,
Tim

Breakfast

I have a carb control yogurt made by Kroger (4 carbs) and 2 pieces of double fiber wheat toast with peanut butter.

saille 10-28-2010 05:58 PM

I've had really good luck with the Fiber One brands of cereals....the Kashi brands are okay with my numbers, too, but taste like cardboard.

Light yogurt is another thing I sometimes grab.

A can of V8 juice is something I like to keep around because it's easy and I've never been much of a breakfast person. The milk chocolate Slim Fast shakes are good, too (but only the brand name, the off brands taste like chalk). I've also found that most of the Slim Fast brand of meal bars and snack bars taste good, too, and if you look you'll see they're decently balanced regarding protein, fiber, carbs, fat, etc. I've tried other brands of meal bars (like Atkins, South Beach, etc) and most of them don't taste good....some are more tolerable than others, but Slim Fast has been at it all long enough to have figured it out, apparently.

And keep in mind that you don't have to limit breakfast to traditional breakfast foods.

ccoqui@bellsouth.net 11-30-2010 03:22 AM

Fiber One cereal would be my first choice with unsweetened almond milk and add some blackberries.

mpw 12-09-2010 12:26 AM

Hi, I eat either raisins ,dates and walnut oatmeal instant with 1 slice toast w/peanut butter lightly I like chunky pb. Or a pb and bananna sandwich, or 1/2 cup Gits with a little cheddar cheese, 2 slice bacon/w a slice of toast whole wheat.

enki74 01-18-2011 04:05 PM

I eat nothing for breakfast best to let the gut rest from last meal of previous day. I have a little chia tea with nut milk made from almonds walnuts sunflower seeds blended and strained a little tupelo honey high in FOS low in sucrose considered safe for diabetics

scrappykat 01-19-2011 08:10 AM

If you dont like the taste of eggs on their own, how about making a quiche.

jeanettelm 01-23-2011 06:46 PM

What do you eat for breakfast

Some mornings I have fiber one cereal. It's high fiber and keeps the carbs down. Also, sometimes I eat a high protein bar or drink slimfast. I'm still fairly new to this but my numbers have been pretty good.

Kijt 02-04-2011 03:56 AM

I have been having hard boiled eggs when I get to work. I had a very bad habit of not eating breakfast, so I struggle with breakfast. When I have the gumption I make egg beater spinach quiche cups.

angieto 02-06-2011 06:58 AM

Md says fiber one

After struggling with my fasting numbers in the morning...I had been eating oatmeal with flax, cinnamon, splenda or agave nectar...but my MD advised my that fiber one better. I like to have a boiled egg with it.

klaw99 02-15-2011 06:17 PM

I used to eat oatmeal for breakfast too.. But its really too high in carbs for me... I did the fiber one thing too which was better and less calories.. But now Im doing cottage cheese ( no fat/ no salt) takes some getting used too and blackberries with cinnamon.. or a egg white vegie omlet if I have time.. The agave nectar really spikes by BS.. probably not as much as sugar but more than I want... so I end up using stevia if I have to make something sweet

spacecadette 03-31-2011 06:19 PM

I don't know if this combination would appeal to you, but these are a couple fo things I cobble together in the morning, and they don't spike my BS very much at all.

Corn tortilla, lightly toasted, with a bit of apple butter (which has no butter in it!), sprinkled with a little cheese, then folded over for a breakfast "taco".

OR a toasted corn tortilla, with a couple of tablespoons of black beans, and a little cheese or some scrambled egg, for a wrap.

If you want to avoid meat, a combination of beans and a grain (corn tortilla, quinoa, etc) will give you a complete protein and not up your triglycerides. A protein and a carb are also lower on the glycemic index, so it's all good.

bongo123 05-03-2011 10:21 PM

I take an English muffin and split and toast it then I add a slice of ham or other lunch meat and a slice of cheese then microwave it to melt the cheese about 20 seconds. I add to that a small apple on the side and some fresh berries. I also take niacin to keep my triglycerides from sticking to the artery walls along with multiple vitamins.

tmarkert2003 05-09-2011 01:59 AM

Something small that works for every meal for me pretty much..
I put hot sauce / hot peppers on EVERYTHING.
YEah I like the burn, but it seems that it must raise my metabolisim or something because I only eat white bread (Low budget here) and sharing a sandwich with a diabetic friend never raises my BG as high as his/hers and the only difference is the added hot sauce or peppers..
NOTE Blairs hot sauce makes a powder (Death Rain Nitro) thats hot as heck BUT it's first ingredient is corn syrup so it's a no no..

andykim0714 05-15-2011 08:47 AM

I normally eat steer cut oatmeal with sliced apple and banana and a cup of black coffee with splenda in it...- if I have more time i have five white eggs with steamed vegetables & two wheat breads- sometimes on wknd, I eat whatever with shake (plain yogurt+ blueberries+ banana + almond + protein powder vanilla flavor mix)... I always am under control for breakfast.. My problem is dinner;(

tamaraaellis 05-19-2011 03:35 AM

Dannon Greek yogurt with strawberries and turkey sausage (precooked) or Canadian bacon.

ella1985 06-17-2011 11:03 AM

I try tosport nutritionseat daily on breackfast eggs. Thus since i love eggs.

jamiessh 07-21-2011 04:40 AM

Greek yogurt, beeries, and granola on top (or a celiac safe topping)

veridian 07-30-2011 03:36 PM

I usually have a bowl of grits and/or oatmeal. If I'm pressed for time I'll eat a carrot stick and a piece of fruit.

ragin 09-19-2011 04:26 PM

Can somebody guide me to a good tummy filling breakfast that doesn't spike your sugar? I am in South India, Asia, Dosas, Idlis, Vadas, Poha etc is our staple breakfast.

bedgberry 10-06-2011 08:34 AM

I take Butter with Bread and some time one glass of milk.

harrison 10-13-2011 11:56 AM

My breakfast is the simplest one. I take oat porridge and a glass of fresh juice. And in addition I take salad sometimes in the week. But I don't eat so much in the breakfast.
