New Diabetic

Hey everyone, I'm 26 years old male..i just got discovered I have diabetes. I've been monitoring my blood sugar with a machine so far before bed I've been doing okay but last two nights it's been up to 230+. Docs say I do not need medication at this time but monitor it with machine and strict diet. What am i suppose to eat to help it more? I'm so lost and I need help.

You'll be fine. Trust your docs. What do you do for exercise? Eat less carbs for dinner. That will help glucose to be lower at night. Good luck. You'll be ok. Relax.

I just began to do powerwalks around my house, the block. I don't expect myself to powerwalk 2 hours but at least 30 minutes a day. I admit I've been slacking but it's hard to adjust. I'm asian so ...white rice is like my main thing. Haha, I don't know how to go from there. I need a lot of guidance.

More vegetables and less rice. :) Good luck!

well cut your portion of rice and try brown instead will help some. I've also been enjoying black rice, ie forbidden rice. Both are higher in fiber and the more al denté the better as will slow down the Carb digestion and therefore will not spike your bg as much.

Also time your walks between 1 & 2 hours after you eat as bg normally Max at 2 hrs after you eat.

Best if luck

Thank you!

Maybe you should try other types of exercise. The more exercise you get, the more rice you can stuff in your face. Advice - do not eat jellies.

I was like that when I was first diagnosed. Had high BS ranges between 230-275. Diet is such an important thing. When ever you have a high reading writ down what you ate prior to that. Make sure you stick to getting your readings when you first wake up and before you go to bed. During the day vary your times a few before lunch and then 2 hrs after lunch. When you write down the foods you eat it will help you understand which foods cause the spikes. I was so upset that I had to give up sushi.... Take your meds and exercise atleast 3 to 5 times a week. Once your figure out your diet and exercise routine and get into your groove, I'm telling you, YOU WILL SEE the difference.

My BS levels now are stable... My goal is to be taken off meds and maintain just through diet and exercise....my A1c level is a lot more stable than before. When first diagnosed it was 11.5. Got it down to 7.4. Trying to get it down to 6.5. I also just did my first triathlon, so diet and exercise has been really good for me.

Hello Everyone,

Hello Everyone, My name is Maxx, I was diagnosed as having Type 2 Diabeties in May of 2011. My doctor at that time told me I could possibly control it if I avoided Carbohydrates. Well I am addicted to Carbs & hate vegetables if I can be honest with you. I was in denial and was told I could control it by diet & eventually ween myself off of the meds. all together. Well a year later, I promised my family I would take better care of myself & be more aggresive in my diabetic care. I now have a new doctor. My A1c was 11.8 as of Aug 1st. I am currently taking Metformin. And scheduled myself to take some classes on diabeties management. I finally had to come to terms & face the facts that I am a diabetic. IT WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO DO! Please help me, My eating habits are horrible, I absolutely hate vegetables, and dont exercise. Please keep me in your prayers. I am going to do my best to take advantage of the tools provided to me from this website. I am glad something like this exist.

If you haven't done it already, check with your doctor about meeting with the Diabetes Educator and dietician at your local hospital. They will be able to help you. I e-mail my BG readings to my Diabetes Educator once a month. Also, when I have my blood work done, I e-mail those results to her, as well. She always gets back to me with either a pat on the back or a "you can do better" note. So, contact your local hospital's Diabetes Educator for some terrific support.

CJ,

Iknow it seems overwhelming, but I am Hispanic and I now thrive on Asian food as a diabetic. There is so much good FOOD in your arsenal and you can have rice, so long as you count it. My diabetic nutritionist formulated a simple diet for me to follow carbs and calories by servings. 1/2 cup of rice is not much, but if you mix in kimchee and soy noodles, dude its a feast. Your doc can set you up with a special Meeting with a diabetic counselor or nutritionist and its covered by most all insurance now as its preventative for.them to do. Anyway, you can trick the veggies out by learning to cook insane things like mashed cauliflauer, spaghetti eggplants, seared braised zuchinni and toss on the lean meat till you get used to it. Trust me MASHED UP.CAULIFLAUER and lowfat butter will fool even you that they are potatoes. You will se an immediate change. Also, if possible, walk a couple hours after supper its good don't 20 points for me. Don't test after you eat. Get used to testing before and the important one is upon waking.

If.you want some.motivation, I have been diabetic for too long and just got out of the hospital with kidney failure, dka and kidney stones. I am given another chance ....again. don't wait too long. friend!

BE WELL!

I hate the words "diet" and "exercise", but have come too grips with both. Start slow like a mile aday, every other day. When your comfortable with that, increase your distance. Drink plenty of water each day.

Do more exercise and eat rice more and walking more and more time.

I'm Asian to ( Korean) with type 2 my diagnosis was 4 weeks ago on Friday. I saw a dietitian to customize my diet for me since I'm really active. As it turns out I'm already eating the way I should be and she said " I wish all my patients were like you". Anyhow as far as rice I switched to black rice check it out way healthier I think they also call it purple rice and forbidden rice. Also get with a dietitian they help tremendously hell I'm so active my carb allowance is 255g a day really the main thing is to get active. I weight train 3 days a week and run (cardio) 3 days a week. Before I was diagnosed I was running 50 or more miles a week I was a marathoner but my doc says that kind of mileage is not recommended and he wants me to put on 10 lbs of muscle. But don't think you need to work out for hours in the gym just a 45 min weight training regimen coupled with 20 mins of cardio ( that's not including warm up or cool down so really its more like 30 mins) is all you need and its every other day. Upper body one day, cardio day 2, lower body day 3, then cardio again just for six days and then you take a break. At six weeks change it up to total body one day and cardio the next just so you avoid plateauing and continue with gains. But my recommendation is see a dietitian.

I had heart surgery back July . Found out I'm pre diabetes my dr put me on metormin 500 mg twice a day. My bg was 189 gave me headache bad. Everytime it get over 120 feel like crap.

addison07 12-29-2012 08:53 PM

I am very sorry to hear about your disease but these things are natural and nobody can do anything. Doctors can give you their best suggestion but they can't give you the assurance that you will get rid of this bad thing. So my dear friends you need to follow the doctor's advice because the home remedies can lead you the panic conditions.

The same as Maxx

Wow Maxx reading your post made me think I could have written it. I was told by my doctor I had type 2 in February of 2013. I went to the hospital Thanksgiving weekend 2012 and found out I had afib and they also said I had diabetes. No way I thought, well I was sure wrong.

I started out really well then have just kind of said oh well. To tell the truth I'm scared, a 59 year old former college football player and I'm scared. I keep saying I need to focus but I don't and I have no one to blame but myself.

resham32 02-05-2014 12:55 PM

When I was first diagnosed a month ago, my BG was 828. Thank god I did not end up in coma. My doctor put me on flip oxide and metformin. And now it has dropped down to around 150 average. I feel way better now.

resham32 02-05-2014 12:59 PM

Error on my earlier post: should be glipizide instead of * oxide
