You are welcome. :) The Blood Sugar 101 website is a good read for all people with diabetes. It should be one of the first websites that a new diabetic visits, as it answers many of the initial questions related to our condition. |

Post Prandial Glucose Testing
Here is another link that goes hand-in-hand with Blood Sugar 101 and Carb Counting 101: Post Prandial Testing

Thanks Dano! Great website/info!
|
Great info, definitely has me thinking about what I should and shouldn't be doing.
|
awesome!
Thanks Dano,
This site really helps.:) |
WOW! That site is just great, and supports my thinking all along, but I've been following the diet suggested by my Educator and she said I *MUST* have 9 carbs a day (15g serves, pretty much) ... that was ~5 years ago, and the only thing thats happened is that I've put on weight and my BGLs have got worse and more out of control.
Reading the info on that site has given me a new lease on hope. I just tested at 15.5 mm/l 2 hours after a 2carb breakfast and I am really ticked off. Wish I had read this before breakfast and not after. No matter, change is afoot. If others can drop their seemingly uncontrolled levels, so can I. *gobsmacked* Excellent site, thanks for posting that link |
You are welcome kyteflyer. :) You can do it! Sometimes we are the only thing standing in our way. I wish you great success!

Lyrebirds & others. The website refers to Dr Richard Bernstein so I have checked his books Diabetes Solution & Diabtes Diet. Lots more instruction & insight for the varied experiences we have managing. I got the diet on on my kindle.
|
You should read the other books referenced, as well. Think Like a Pancreas: A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin
by Gary Scheiner MS, CDE is another good book if you are having to use insulin. |
I too STRONGLY recommend "think like a pancreas" as a must read for insulin dependent diabetics.
|
TLM I have Type 2. My nephrologist recommended "Dr Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes" - Amazon.com. Emphasis is on reducing fat in the blood - Vegan diet. I am just beginning.

 good information on here thanks.

Yes, it is a great website. I also recommend Dr. Bernstein's diabetic diet book & testing a lot. My husband was headed into neuropathy & it has now reversed. Also testing a lot has helped me find the best time to take mr Metformin ER

On my last visit to my endo, she wanted to put me on insulin and no matter what anyone tells me, as a TypeII I regard this as a failure on my part, to do whats sensible, and thats to drop carbs from my diet. I'm not on insulin but she's added Actos as a third line, which has had an immediate good effect. I need to get with the program though because I have just now been reading on that site how dangerous Actos is in the long term. I'm not getting any side effects yet... but why tempt fate. Back on the low/no carb bandwagon, me: I want off most of those meds. I have 2 months left in which to prove to her that I can get my A1c down, and I know its already dropping like a rock. |
At my one visit to a nutritionist, she wanted me to eat something like 15-30 carbs at mealtime! At 30 carbs, I usually fall asleep. A few nights ago, I spiked at 248 on 48 carbs.
I understand that nutritionists, CDEs, and doctors must go by what's been proven and accepted by the medical community -- it's the way they're trained, and if they try something different and it doesn't work, they get sued -- but it's apparent to me that it's not a one-size-fits-all situation. I can't deal with that many carbs, period. On another forum, someone commented that he/she just nods and pretends that he/she is following the recommended diet. The doctor's happy with the great A1c numbers and cholesterol numbers. I think that's what I'm going to do the next time I saw my doctor: "Oh, yes, I saw the nutritionist. My numbers are getting much better." I'll just leave out the part where I decided to go low-carb instead ;) |
Thanks for the article! This week is my fort week ever where my blood sugar averages below 120.
91 out of bed this am. The denial phase lasted longer for me, and I resisted my Doc every step of the way. No more, I want to make it to my seventies and beyond. |
That is a fantastic site. I think I'll be printing most of it and adding it to my diabetes folder I've started
|
I highly recommend Jenny Ruhl's Diet 101 book. In Chapter 9, she gives very practical advice to learn how many carbs you can eat and keep your blood sugar in "heart healthy" range by testing before lunch or dinner, 1 and 2 hours after. I also recommend protein shakes made with low carb, high protein whey. They curb appetite. Made with almond milk and heavy whipping cream and low net carb fruits etc, a meal like breakfast will have 10-20 carbs. This will give you a good head start on controlling carbs for the day.

Thank you for the great link! I spent hours reading as much as I could on this website and I really appreciate the level of detail the author goes into - especially on the different medications available to treat diabetes.
I was diagnosed with type 2 almost 3 weeks ago and just completed an all day class at my local hospital. They mentioned all of the types of meds, but didn't go into depth on any of them. They also didn't discuss serious side effects or drug efficacy, and certainly did not link to any of the research that has been done on the newer meds. Now I feel like I am prepared to meet my doctor on equal ground. I have very definite opinions on what I am and am not willing to do or take to treat my diabetes. If nothing else I learned that I need to advocate for myself and ask lots of questions. |
Wow! Infrmatve link
Thank u dano. |
I just took a quick look at that site. My A1c is...if I remember correctly...5.7. I was told that normal ranges are from 70-100. I was surprised to see 70-92! I wonder if my doctor is still going by the "old norms"? I will have to go over the site some more...when I'm feeling a bit better.

I get my test strip from hospital pharmacy 100 strip $10 accu chek. My meds cost me $1. There is help out there do web search or ask hospital around you.
|
Thank you!!! this site was really helpful, I will forward it to my Doctor :p
|

and thank you so much for posting it.. makes me feel a lot better about being inflicted w this nasty disorder, illness.
|
It's a great site, full of good advice.
Shame that the "official sites" don't use some of this stuff! |
This is by far the best website I have visited in the 3 years of having diabetes, thank you so much! Lots of very factual material, I had to book mark it so I can finish reading it all. So many answered questions :)

Is there any side effect of the medicine ISTAMET 50mg/500mg
I am 56 years old and a patient of diabetes mellitus since 2010 which I hope acquired through heridity as both of my parents are acute diabetic and under insulin treatment. After I started taking one tab each before both Break fast & Dinner, since last about 6 months my sugar level remains under control (140-160). Earlier I was taking insulin. Now would like to know is there any side effect of the subject medicine which I am taking.
