Craving Chocolate!!!

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes again (3rd time) about 3 weeks ago. I'm 32 weeks now. The diet changes have been killer, especially with all the Christmas sweets in the house. I am trying to be really good and watch my diet really closely. But I leave myself feeling hungry most the time and craving the sweets I can't have, like chocolate!! Does anyone else have any suggestions? I hate being hungry all the time and I miss sweet stuff!

Take a look at this website and do a google search for "flavonoid-rich dark chocolate". :)

There is a great chocolate soy milk that I found at Walmart that is very low carb, tastes pretty good and quenches my chocolate cravings pretty well. It is called Soy Slender Soymilk and is located just down the aisle from the juices :)

You could also try sugar-free chocolate. It would help the choc cravings for me. (warning: laxative effect!) I also got the coffee shot flavors in sugar-free, and would add the to a glass of milk. That helped those cravings a lot!

Well, I enjoy Dark, Very Dark 80% or better pure cacao, by favorite is Dagoba Eclipse Dark Chocolate 87% Cacao. Now I do not eat but a 1/5th of the bar(2 rectangles worth) with my nightly decaf espresso. If you like very dark chocolate, it isn't that bad for you, carb-wise...Yes it does have a lot of fat, but if it really has a high percentage of cacao then the fiber and protein should be high and the sugars at 50% or less of the carbs. Unfortunately hot processing chocolate destroys alot of the antioxidants but still should retain a good amount.
I have found some naturally dried cacao powder that is not heat processed.
Example: The Lindt Excellence Supreme Dark Chocolate 90% Cacao Bar nutrition info: 170 Cal(153 fat) Fat 17g, SatFat 9g, Carb 4g, Fiber 2g, Sugars 2g, Protein 3g. And that is per serving of 3 squares.

I work the calories into my daily plan as well as the fat and of course I would not even eat the 3 squares but only 1.

I treat myself to a chocolate drink for diabetics by Glucerna or Boost. I'm a real chocoholic and one of these warmed up is really satisfying.

I would also have a look at really dark chocolate as they usually have a less sugar. You could also get sugar free chocolate like c123anderson mentioned against the worst cravings. That should probably help you. Another tip, let the chocolate slowly melt in your mouth and don't swallow it instantly. Really enjoy it - once you’re done with your first 'bite' you'll see that the 'attack' is over.

There is no way that your 32 weeks and posting here. That means you're almost 3 years old. Certainly you are older than that. Funny!

I've found that Snickers or any dark chocolate over 70% raise my bg little to none. If i eat a snickersbar of 55grams I might go from a 5.2 to a 6. That's the base candy I eat when craving for something sweet, but i do munch down on real candy from time to time but then I do it with a shot of NovoRapid to keep the bg in place.

Fake chocolate has fake sugar and it isn't healthy. If you crave sweets, you probably aren't getting enough fat. Eat bacon instead.

My dr has told me that I can have a piece of chocolate or something as long as I am strict with my diet throughout the day. Having a bite or two of chocolate isn't going to make a huge difference. If you have a bite or two of chocolate or high sugar or carbs every hour or two then you will have an issue. I love sweet tea and hate the diabetic sweeteners. So I compromise. I drink lots of water and one day a week for supper I get a glass of sweet tea, provided that meal is full of protein and good veggies and very little carbs. Rarely have I had any issues with my sugars being high when doing two hour followup check. Moderation is the key.

I agree with the a lot of the posts. Replacing sugar with fake sugar will only make you crave it more. It's ok to have sugar here and there with high protein meals. Just count it in with your carb allowance or try some chocolate milk. That way you are getting protein and your chocolate fix!

For a tasty alternative for your chocolate craving use the Atkins meals or snack bars. They help keep your levels done while (I believe) satisfying the chocolate or sweets cravings. Good luck!

I have to agree with other posters. I have found that dark chocolate is great for killing the craving. If you live near an IKEA, their dark chocolate is 8 squares for 19g I beleive. Barely over a serving. And it is quite inexpensive. (I can rarely eat 8 squares). And I second the suggestion by another poster about savoring each bite...it really does help. Stick to European sweets - they tend to use much less sugar.

Remember, it's not about cutting ALL sugars out, it's about moderation and knowing what you are eating. If you deprive yourself in ANY diet of something you will crave it even more. If you want a peice of cake - then plan for it. Don't make it a regular thing, but a treat for when you have been doing really good.
