I have been a surgical diabetic for about 18 months. My pancreas was removed because of pre pancreatic cancer. I'm doing well but I'm very sensitive to insulin and food. It's a full time job at times. I don't think there are a lot of me out there.

I was diagnosed at the age of 7, in 1998, I am now 22 years old. The doctors in my home town thought I had the flu and was literally killing, one day my great grandma checked my level, and called the ambulance, they took me 2 hours out of town, and low and behold I was diagnosed with type 1. Juvenile diabetes . Really strange, no one on either sides of family has any history of it. Just my luck !

I found out i was diabetic at the age of 18. My fiancé keep saying something about going an be checks. He's father In low is to. But my little brother got sick one night and I ended up getting sick the next night. Throwing up. Everything and keep in my my parents had no idea at the time about diabetes. But I guess I ended up going into a coma. And when my dad got home from work the day after I got sick the rushed me to the er. It took them four hours to get a level. When they got it it was 986. My doctor told me that my level was probably at lests 1200 when I came in. They started pupping me with insulin right away. I was in a coma for four days was let out three days after that and that was 2.5 years ago. That happen in may and then that October I got pregnant with my now 1 year and two month old son.

I was 7 when I was diagnosed back in 1998. Doctors kept misdiagnosing me for weeks, saying it was just a yeast infection. Finally my mom refused to leave the doctor's office until he could tell her what was really wrong. He sent me for some blood work and phoned our house that night telling mom to take me into the Stollery. My reading was 48 mmol and I was given 2 days left to live if I hadn't been brought in. I've never felt so sick in my life. Still working to get my A1c down to a good level, but I'm close :)

I was diagnosed in 30th of May this year. During that month i lost around 10kg in 2 weeks. Since i'm in the military i explained the symptoms to the nurse there (i was drinking 4l of water everyday and i couldn't kill the thristy and was peeing a lot during the whole day). Blood sugar was around 300 fasting. I was rushed to the hospital after lunch and the doctors couldn't tell me how were the levels (the machines they had there only tested to 700). I always took care of my body but i was a bit sloppy with the food (not in terms of quality but of times, i only ate 2-3 times per day till then). It wasn't that hard for me to adapt because i had a girlfriend once who had type 1 aswell so i educated myself pretty fast to it. Spent 5 days in the hospital and so far so good with it.

Cheers.

I was diagnosed in 1998. At the time I was playing rugby league, 4 training a week. Mid season I was performing bad, tired, and pushing after better result till It was no longer possible to not see a doctor. I went and crazy I was ask to do all test except glucose !!!! I collapsed 15 days later as I was getting more tired, thirsty and drinking water with sugar !!! I got admitted to tropical desease dpt as doc thought I was having a reaction 10 months after a sort of infection when I got back from a trip in Senegal. Over there they connected me a perfusion of glucose (like if they wanted to kill me) and obviously 1hr later they stop it as they realise they were wrong and transfer me another department, I lost 30kg from 80kg I was to 50kg, I wa like dead !! But recover well
I am steady at 72kg for the past 15years
I Am on Humalog and Lantus
Married, 3 kids in good health and all very sporty
I am French and live in Guildford

Diagnosed type 2 in 2006. Rediagnosed type 1 this month.

mshelters 12-15-2013 01:30 AM

I was diagnosed as a type 1 back in 1959. After 54 years of diabetes
I'm still doing ok, but diabetics is a challenging disease no matter how long you've had it. Hang in there and learn to balance life vs health. I'm going for longest living type 1. I heard the record to beat currently stands @ 81 years.

I was diagnosed when I was 3 years old. I am now 17, diabetes has been part of my life for almost 14 years. I honestly don't know where if would be without it, I love the uniqueness my diabetes gives me. I believe I take good care of my diabetes. I also have an AMAZING support system behind me; and a younger diabetic sister who knows exactly what I'm talking about even if I don't make any sense.

I was just diagnosed last Saturday on January 4, 2014. It's been a hectic week between the hospital visits and then visiting my diabetes center. Im slowly starting to understand that this was nota curse but a blessing. I'm more knowledgeable about my body and my mind. I am an 18yr old college freshman with big dreams and this will not slow me or anyone else down but it is just another step in our day and chapter in our journey! :)

abduak 01-26-2014 08:37 PM

I was diagnosed 2 weeks from today. My a1c was 14.7.
I was drinking a lot of water and urinating all the time as symptoms for 4 months.

I've been eating 0 carbs this far and maintaining 120-140 blood sugar average until I can see the specialist this week.

I'm 23, athletic, and always ate home cooked meals. Not sure why this happened to me.

Hey guys just have a look on what food you need to consume in order to get rid of diabetes:

All the folks dealing with the problem of diabetes are recommended to consume foodstuffs that have low proportion of sugar, fats and salt. The below mentioned a checklist of particular eatables that can facilitate you to maintain a healthy diet and also steer clear of diabetes concerned disorders.

Diagnosed in 1965

I was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1965. It seems like it's been a long time, and it feels like I have never been without my Type 1.

I hadn't been feeling well, and my mom--a nurse--took my urine to the clinic where she worked. A few minutes after she gave the sample to her lab co-worker, he came running down the hall, saying, "Get your daughter to the hospital. She has diabetes."

It was a total shock. I was in the hospital about a week, and then I was sent out into a world that seemed completely altered. Nothing ever seemed the same to me. I had a long time resisting and denying. But it didn't go away.

I do ok now. I get angry still, though. I do the old "why me?" thing. But I have dealt with this for 49 years, and I plan to keep going as long as I can.

I was 8 years old (now 23) and all of a sudden I started wetting the bed. So my mom took me in to see if I had some sort of infection. After peeing in a cup, I instantly got sent to the children's hospital in the cities!

I was diagnosed with T1 on 12/31/13 at 19. I had a week with my diagnosis at home before I had to go back to college. It was a totally rushed process, but I've been able to keep my sugars in control. For anyone that's struggling with a new diagnosis I strongly suggest watching YouTube videos of other diabetics and reading books like "think like a pancreas." Although I had to change my life style, educating myself made the transition a lot easier. If anyone is dealing with T1 in college or has advice I would love to hear from you.

1966

I was diagnosed as a type 1 48 years ago at the age of 4 in 1966. Have been on insulin from the start back in the days when syringes were glass and had to be heated in a little autoclave at home. I have been very fortunate. I have none of the bad issues that can result from diabetes, other than my skin being a little tired of injections. :)

I am following all the rules. I still fluctuate. It has been one month.

roadierider 08-13-2014 11:45 PM

Diagnosed Nov 6, 1965, this yr will be 49yrs. I'm still old school, keep sugar below 200, never believed in tight control, and never will. Back then, didn't have the technology there is now for testing. Used to boil a glass syringe, only urine testing for sugar levels. And in 49yrs have only been hospitalized 2 times and both was out with-in 6hrs. In fact, just began glucose testing about 6yrs ago. I don't pay much heed to the Dr's, seems they want to treat us all the same. what I learned at 17 was diabetics are like snowflakes, there are no 2 alike. I don't eat anything sugar free, been counting carbs for 30yrs. I must be doing something right, since I'm relatively free of major complications. .Any way, shooting for 75yrs to be on insulin, 26 more yrs to go. LOL

aggiephobic 11-01-2014 09:11 PM

After having my pancreas removed due to cancer a year and a half ago I have had type one diabetes. I take Lantus and Humalog and I'm doing pretty well on those. Since they only gave me six months to live I've made it a year and a half so far and still going strong. I keep very careful check on my diet also.

BlindSight 11-04-2014 11:41 AM

I will try to keep this short, because I have an extensive type one history. I was diagnosed in the early spring of 1986. I am over 40 now and doing pretty well, despite the adversity the diabetes has given me.I have spent a lot of time going in and out of the hospital. I went blind due to the diabetes in late 2004 and my kidneys shut down and now I am on dialysis since 2007. However, this has not slowed me down in living my life. Before I lost my eyesight, I was a professional tote truck driver for six years, I was also a club manager and bouncer for eight years, I was also a printing press room for over 15 years, and also a car mechanic for all of my life. Now that I have lost my eyesight, I had to scale it back just a little bit. I have had a passion for H rock and roll all of my life, so now I am a drummer and I will play with various bands locally for the public. I am mentioning this, because it is a very high energy thing to do. I also install and operate various audio systems for churches in the area, which requires all lot of work and memory on how things work and already laid out.

Please forgive the typos in this, as I am using a reader on my phone to type it all out. That should read that I have a passion for 80s rock and roll.

I have been through a lot of struggles due to my diabetes, but don't let it slow you down in living your life. I am forced to live my life on a knife edge, because I can fall off either side in a heartbeat. My numbers are nowhere near perfect, but I do my best to stay on top of my diet and my insulin I encourage everybody with diabetes to not let it ruin your life. Life is not over just because you have diabetes. When I started, there were not many reasonable treatment for diabetes. Now there are many treatments for diabetes and there is no reason that you can't go on living a normal life.

Smile and have a nice day.

48 years T1

I was diagnosed at age 4, which is 48 years ago. I've been on insulin my entire life. I have no complications at all and consider myself very, very blessed.

LinbecLa 01-18-2015 01:57 AM

I was diagnosed with Type 1 in October 1964 when I was 29. It was about 11 months after my first child was born and no one that I know of in my family had ever had diabetes. So last year I celebrated of 50 years on insulin. I have an insulin pump for about 14 years & like it very much I am still learning - there is always more to learn about diabetes.

lorie_yanz 01-26-2015 09:03 AM

I was diagnosed when I was 20 years old and now I'm 31. I had all the symptoms but didn't realize it was diabetic symptoms till later. One morning I couldn't even get out of bed but def knew something was wrong! My body just shut down! My mom dressed me and took me to the doctors. I thought I had a bad case of the flu or something. Doctor came back in telling me I've been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and I cried. I didn't know what diabetes was but knew it wasn't good. My glucose reading was close to 1000. Got hospitalized with lots of needles in me. Body felt like collapsing. It was the biggest life adjustment I've had to make. Getting it in my early twenties was difficult because that's when "life is suppose to be starting" and the time where you feel in your prime but for me life seemed it was slowly ending. Struggled with depression but overcame it with God! God is the difference maker for me and the hope I wake up everyday with!
