4th February 1976...
I was diagnosed as diabetic the day before my 11th birthday, so it's easy to remember how long I have been diabetic for, 36 years and still counting.
Like many others here I rebelled during my teenage years. Having started on three jabs a day, then two, then one (all prescribed by the doctor), when the put me back to two I refused, or rather I just didn't do my evening injections. Eventually though I got fed up with feeling horrible and uncomfortable, sorted myself out and got back in to the program, so much so that I am on 4 jabs a day and loving the control and flexibility I get with it! Mind you, I am impressed by those of you who have pumps. I have friends who say "I could never inject myself" (indeed, my brother-in-law faints at the sight of a needle). Personally I would not be able to put up with having a needle in me permanently, but as I tell people if the choice is "do it or die" then you find you can do amazing things, maybe if it came to it I could use a pump, but for now I'm happy to not have to, and to be impressed at those of you that do! All diabetics, especially old-timers like me, have words of wisdom for anyone new to diabetes. Mine is "Don't let it stop you doing what you want": I have parachuted, scuba-dived and I ride a motorbike on a daily basis for the love of the adrenalin rush. It's true that I will never get my pilots licence although I did look in to it and you can certainly fly with an instructor beside you, just not on your own (or commercially). Nor will I ever drive a bus or join the armed forces and that's probably the only thing I will miss. |\/|artin |
I was diagnosed last week at the age of 39. I knew all the symptoms as my 20yo daughter was diagnosed at the age of 9mos. My blood sugars have been averaging about 450 all week. I have an endocrinologist appointment first thing in the morning. I am SO ready to start feeling better!

I was diagnosed 44years ago in 1967. I have 3 beautiful healthy daughters aged 25,23 and 20 all without diabetes. I've been on insulin pump for 3.5yrs after increased frustration with trying to keep blood levels right. Suffer with joint probs and arthritis-hip replacement and another pending-would like to know if there's research on linking joint probs with diabetes?

I was diagnosed with type 1 September 2010. I had not been feeling good for a while and thought I had a urinary tract infection! So I went to the dr. They told me my sugar was around 600 and said I had diabetes. And this was a walk in clinic so I thought they were crazy! No one in my family has it, I can't have diabetes. They told me to go to the hospital and I went home instead b/c I was in denial! My husband asked what happened cause I was crying my eyes out! He said well I'm taking you! So he took me to the ER and they put me in ICU for a couple days to get my sugar level down and rehydrated me with all these fluids! It was awful! After 5 days in the hospital, I could finally go home! But now I know that diabetes is serious and is not to be messed around with! I am 25 years old and take shots if insulin everyday but I'm still the same person I was before I had been diagnosed. I love to hike, camp, and just being out doors with my husband! Nothing is going to stop me from doing what I love not even diabetes!

I was diagnosed back in 2000 at the age of eight.. I'm 19 now. I was diagnosed a year after my little sister was diagnosed. We were conducting a panda study (blood test between family members of a diabetic to see their chances of becoming a diabetic) and my mom check my blood sugar which was 300 and something. We went for a walk/run came back checked it again and it was in the 400s so my mom called my sisters doctor and she told her to bring me in.

Type 1 at age 36. After much assumption that I was type 2 by Doctors. Had to insist they start me on insulin while they waited for tests to come back. Blood sugar was in 800's.when results came back as type 1 doc says to me "you are type 1"! I said I hate to say I told you so but...
Amazingly no one even showed me how to give myself shots, just gave me scripts and sent me on my way. Thank God for the Internet where I learned how to give myself injections. Today I have a pump and a new Doctor :-) |
Hey, I'm Mark,
I was diagnosed in 2001, when I was 3 years of age. I started to drink lots of water, to a point that I woke up in the middle of the night and took the water that my Mum brought up to bed with her. One night she threw the water out the window after I was getting angry and upset that she didn't give it to me, I started crying. The next Monday she took me to my GP. They did a blood test on me and it came back high. They said I needed to go to hospital straight away. I was in hospital for a few days while they did tests on me and stuff. The tests came back positive, I had diabetes ); I am now 13 and have dealt with it very well. I hope it has gone, and continues, to go as well as it has gone for me as it does for you. - Mark |
Well I was diagnosed in 04 3 days after Christmas I would get really shaky and was drinking and going to the bathroom a lot I was 9 and now I'm 16 as of yesterday:)

In 1998!was 18 and first year student at medical school.got depressed couldn't manage at all with insulin injections twice daily and an extremely strict diet.
Definitely doing a lot better now.pumping for 5 years |
diagnosed at 39
I was diagnosed with type 1 this past January 2011. I am 39 years old and I thought really healthy! It was kind of "lucky" that we caught it so early. I was not feeling bad at all but had gone in for some routine testing and for some reason I found myself saying "maybe we should do a fasting test because 12 years ago I had gestational diabetes". I remember the Dr. saying to check my BG periodically because gestation diabetes can be a marker for full diabetes later in life. Shocked to actually hear that my fasting numbers were 220. A1C was 10.8! Took awhile to sink in, then went through feeling angry, then depressed. Not fair that I eat healthy, workout regularly and get this at 39!!
Now I am going on 9 months. It is a daily battle but my lows are fewer my highs are happening less (still working on this) and I am waiting for my insulin pump to replace my injections. :D |
Hi alybrown,
I got my T1 at 36, my brother at 34. There are no certainties in life with T1, both me and my brother worked out plenty, eat right and took great care. As we got T1 we both took it with a shoulder shrug, it could have been worse or something else. As the treatment today is manageable there is not much holding one back. We live as we used to, eat what we used to except for the injections. I’m also pushing 9-10 months right now (diagnosed in dec -10), and I’m feeling like I’ve done this my whole life. In the end, there is so many people in the world who struggle harder than I do, so I just enjoy my days to the fullest. Keep up the good work and I hope you get some relief with the pump. |
Splix,
Thank you for your response! It is amazing how many people I am hearing getting diagnosed with T1 in there 30's. I agree with you, about things could be worse. I Tell myself that all the time. It is not cancer and I got this instead of my kids (thank god). I am definetly getting better with the carb counting. With me it is more of learning which foods digest slower than others to prevent those lows. Sound like you are doing well with that? Thanks again for your response. It is nice to hear a positive outlook on the T1 life! |
Hi, I was diagnosed on October 23 1998 On my 6th birthday. We were at my aunts house (she's diabetic along with myself my sister and my father) and they tested my sugar and it was about 255 if I remember correctly and I still remember the look on my moms face . She was so upset because she knew what was going on. She took me to the hospital and while I was there all the nurses felt bad for me and bought me presents ... Ill be 19 in 7 days and that makes it my 13th year with type 1

Hi everyone, was diagnosed when I was 31 back in 2008 and ignored every single sign I had of it, I guess maybe because I didn't want to believe it. Long story short I woke up in the hospital 2 days later after having a BG of (you may not believe this) 1500 and lived to tell about it. I am grateful to be alive, but have struggled somewhat to still want to believe it. My brother has had it since he was 4, so familiar with the disease. I have gotten much better at this and my average is around 152 now for BG, very happy. It takes discipline and hard work, however never give up hope. A light came on that made me realize how lucky I was and not to mess this up, I was given another chance and here for a reason. It does get easier.

I was diagnosed at the age of 8 with a blood sugar in the 700s. I am now almost 21 years old and have never had an HBA1C below 9. It is currently 11.6 and my doctors have never seemed concerned.
|
I was diagnosed in 2009. How exactly does an insulin pump do? Is it better to have that than use shots? Tsh
|
I was diagnosed at the age of 5. No hospitalizations-thank goodness! During a routine physical, the doctor noticed sugar in my pee and sent me to the diabetes doctor's office. Now I'm 15 and just celebrated my 10 year diabetes anniversary :) It's somewhat difficult managing my diabetes in highschool but i'm hoping this app will help me keep a discrete log of my numbers so I can get my A1C down!
|
I was diagnosed in December 2005. I was 25 yoa. Thought it was crazy to be diagnosed with T1 as an adult, but now realize its more common than I thought. Been on a pump for about 5 years.
|
I was 4 years old and am now 38. I am hoping to get on an insulin pump. Seeing a new doctor, and working with him to achieve this goal. I've been a very lucky diabetic, never been hospitalized of diabetic reasons. And honestly never really done the right thing. Now that I am older I am finally seeing that my luck is gonna run out and working hard to remember to test and get things under control.

I was diagnosed February 24,1999. I was 9 years old.. This has played a pretty tough roll in my life and the disease is winning on the score board! I remember my mom crying in the doctor office my bs wasn't able to be read on their machine..

type 1
hi im lou i was diagnosed in 1995 i was 21 and i had been seeing my new boyfriend for 6 months, i was frequently urinating and felt thirsty all the time, my sister who was a NA told me to get tested for diabetes, so i did ..my bg was only in the 300's at the time i was still making insulin and went to a teaching hospital and enrolled in a research study where they paid for all of my care for the first year. i just had to succumb to any and all blood tests, where they monitored me as i became more dependent on insulin as my pancreas eventually stopping making insulin...my BF is now my husband and we have been together for 17 years. i have been in pretty good controll and never really needed support but since having kids and working full time+ i have been having higher and higher a1c's i am now at 8. something and i really want to get it back down to 5 something like i was before kids...so any advice is appreciated :D

I was diagnosed when I was 7 in Armenia. That was in April of 1997. I was actually the 10th child to have Diabities. It was something unheard of in Armenia for a child to have diabities. There was no hospital specializing for children with Diabities. Now there are more then 4 Hospitals.

I was born 1992 and at age 1 I got it in 1993. I've never actually remember how it feels to not have it. My body is more resistant to th effects due to having so long. Highest was over 1000 and hospital meters don't register over that... Lowest was 27... In both cases I felt a little sick but not to what most people would experiance. I've never passes out.
Diabetes is damaging if not under control. |
Im in health care and i recognized the symptoms of peeimg and drinking all the time so i had my sugars checked, came back 46! So at the age of 22 i found out i am type 1. Sugars are mow running an average of 6.3 and its been two months since diagnosis :)

I was diagnosed at 23, 4 years ago. I thought I was home sick home with the flu and ended up in a coma. My neighbor found me passed out in my room and I was rushed to the ER where I spent 7 days in the ICU. When I was taken to the hospital by ambulance, apparently it took hours to diagnose me as diabetic. I had no family symptoms and since I was unconscious they were unaware of what was wrong. Eventually a nurse shift change prompted my new nurse to check my blood sugar and voila! I had extremely low potassium which almost led to cardiac arrest and was told by everyone I was lucky to be alive. My body was shutting down.
I'll admit that I had a very hard time adjusting to the diabetic lifestyle. I've always had a major sweet tooth and found it extremely difficult to be compliant on my insulin. I had always been slim and noticed that the insulin was making me fat. I was admitted into the hospital 3 more times in a year and a half for DKA. My endocrinologist refused to continue seeing me unless I began seeing a psychologist to help me deal with my denial of my condition. I refused and began to see a different endo and was very happy. Unfortunately, 4 years later I am still not in control of my diabetes. It is a constant struggle but I am definitely determined to get my BG under control! |
Diagnosed at 21 months old with type 1. Almost 15 and a half years old now, so I've had it almost 14 years! I don't remember life without diabetes, but the older I get, the more I wish I could know what life Could be like without it.
|
I was diagnosed when I was 14 months old. Got really sick and tested for it. I'm an identical twin and both of us got it within 32 hours of eachother. Most people get the luxury if knowing what a normal life is. I didn't!! Was the youngest person to go on the insulin pump, mini med 508. They sucked. Back to shots now. I'm on humalog and lantus. I'm 20 years old now. And doing good. Screw diabetes.

I was diagnosed yesterday Wednesday may 16. I was at school and my stomach began to hurt, then it got really hot and I was about to pass out. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed. My blood sugar was around 800. I am 15. My brother also has it, he is 16 but was diagnosed at 13

I was diagnosed when I was 7-years-old, nearly 23 years ago. I came inside from playing and told my mom that I was tired and I wanted a nap. She almost fell over because I was a very high-energy kid. I was also drinking a ton of water, and obviously, peeing a lot. My mom told me that I was lucky that they were able to catch it so early.
I've done a lot of experimenting with my eating, going from vegetarian to vegan and now I'm finally at Paleo. I've just ordered Dr. Berstein's book and I can't wait to read it. This low carb thing is working really well for me so far. |
I was diagnosed on January 1, 2012 and my blood sugar was around 600 and my keytones were 2000 and im a type 1 and only 13 and i could have died the next morning and i was experiencing a lot of pain and it was uncomfortable and i had it for 2 years without and medicine and they said that they have never seen anyone survive that long. Worst moment: oily hair, smelly body, and white as flip and my eyes changed colors also... My friend came to visit me and she was like 8|
|
Also my A1C was 20
|
February 2009 I was having frequent urination and always thirsty, I was in denial that I had diabetes but my mom convinced me to check my blood sugar and it was over 600. Having been doing well since then, I have my days when I hate the disease but I have a 4 year old daughter to live for and that keeps me going.

It all started when i was thirsty for water 24/7 i was in a hotel and even woke up in the middle of the night to drink water from the faucet without anyone noticing. I tried hiding this for about a week when my mouth started turning white all the time, however i got rid of this by drinking more water. I kept telling my mom I was okay and she trusted me however she begged me to see a doctor. After a urine test and showing all the symptoms on Feb 26, 2010 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was 13,small and skinny, and now 2 years later i think i still have a lot to learn. Only about one or two people on both sides of my family had been diagnosed. However living far away from my family I was not familiar to diabetes and was very scared. After being diagnosed I had to be sent to a better clinic that specialized in diabetes because the equiptment they had weren't as good it couldnt calculate my BG and said it was 400+ mg/dls ... At the better clinic it still couldn't calculate and said 800+ mg/dls
|
I was diagnosed January of 2010. No one in my family has diabetes and I only went in to the clinic because I was pretty sure I was pregnant. Well I was, but they also discovered type 1 diabetes. They sent me strait to the hospital to confirm and to get me started on some meds so my baby would be ok. When I first went in my a1c was 9 something within two and a half months I got it down to 6.0 without the help of a nutritionist ( she made me cry). The hardest part was just when I was going into the second trimester I lost the baby. Since then it has been a struggle to keep up a good a1c. I am hoping to kick things into gear, to go see a nutritionist and start cracking down on a healthy lifestyle so when I am ready to have a child I will be healthy with healthy habits. I have always felt that my baby came down to tell me that I was sick and to get better. So that I would be healthy when he/ she is ready to enter into our world.
